Mailbag 13 May 2022

We were delighted with the way our wonderful Year 6 children conducted themselves this week during SATs. Thank you also to the entire staff who supported the children all week. We would like to wish our Year 2 children the very best of luck as it is their turn next week!

It was great to see a full house at last night’s Comedy Night. There were a lot of laughs and plenty of suggestions on how to use the funds raised - my favourite was the idea of a cocktail bar for the staff and parents! A massive thank you to Stuart Goldsmith and Friends of Hillcrest for bringing this together.

Another round of applause for Mr Wilson and the entire staff team for achieving The Rainbow Flag Award. This is in recognition of the whole-school approach we have taken towards LGBT+ inclusion.

Have a lovely weekend, and Year 6 and Year 4, make sure you get an early night on Sunday ready for Camp on Monday morning!

News for Everyone

The Rainbow Flag Award - We are very, VERY proud to have been awarded The Rainbow Flag Award! Over the past year, we have been working alongside The Proud Trust to develop our practise to ensure that LGBT+ children, families and staff are safe in our school, included in our community and visible in our curriculum.

We sent off an absolute mountain of evidence a few weeks ago, highlighting all the brilliant things we do, from our reading books to our assemblies. The Trust were beyond delighted with all we have done at Hillcrest... an "easy" pass and "some of the best primary work [they] have ever seen". You can read more of their feedback and find more about the award and what it means at Hillcrest HERE.

My Great Hillcrest Spelling Saga - Please keep practising your spellings at home every week for your weekly check-ins.  This term isn't long enough to complete an entire level, so our next level checks and Bosses will be taking place at the start of next term, on Wednesday 8th June.  Good luck!

Fish and chips on School Census Day next Thursday - Our annual funding for Universal Free School meals is set according to the number of school dinners taken on School Census Day - 19th May. It will make a real difference to the school’s finances if as many children as possible have a school meal that day. We’ll be switching the menu and serving fish fingers and chips, with the all-important ketchup, on Thursday instead of Friday.

Slapped Cheek - There is a case in Yr 3. See the NHS information HERE. Tell your midwife or a GP if you're pregnant or have a weakened immune system and have been near someone with slapped cheek syndrome.

Congratulations to this week’s Celebration Award Winners - Photo HERE.

Save the date - Sports Day will be on 1st July at Knowle Cricket Ground, with a reserve date, 8th July, in case it rains.

Future Stars Half Term Holiday Club is open for bookings. Details HERE.

Join our Volunteer Reading Team - For the first time since the pandemic, we are very excited to reopen our doors to volunteers to come in to support children with their reading. We want to build up a team of volunteer readers who can pop into school regularly and help children flourish with their reading.

If you, or someone you know, are interested, this is what you need to do:

  • Then, as soon as you can, drop into the school office with two valid IDs and proof of address so we can get your DBS sorted. If you already have a DBS, please drop in to show us so we can put it on our system.

And here is what will happen next:

  • There will be a ‘Reading Volunteers’ induction from 9-10am on Tuesday, 24th May. This will be a guide on how to support a child with their reading.

  • Afterwards you will be given a child, or a group of children, to hear read regularly throughout Term 6, which begins Tuesday, 7th June.

If you have the time, we would love to have you on board - you will make a real difference in a child’s life.

Big love to The Banana Boat who donated a huge box of juicy satsumas to refresh the Yr 6 children doing their SATs this week!

A message from the Yr 6 Leavers Organisation Committee - Apologies to parents whose children missed out on ice-lollies today. We obviously underestimated the amount we needed. We will be back next week (weather permitting) to sell more. We will have more lollies and we will sell in both playgrounds so younger kids don't miss out. Thanks to everyone who bought them from us today - we really appreciate the support.
