Mailbag 13 November 2020

Despite us nearing the end of the first week of another lockdown, school remains a constant for our children, with lots happening as our thoughts turning towards Christmas!

Whilst you won’t be able to join us at Totterdown Baptist Church as usual, never fear! We are bringing Christmas to you! Mr McIntyre has set the staff a challenge - ‘Nativity in a Week’ (or, more accurately, four days, as we have an Inset day on Friday 18th December). He has asked the staff to plan, write and direct a Christmas play with their class, which you will be able to watch on Thursday 16th December via Zoom.

The staff are under strict instruction NOT to cheat by practicing or discussing how their class will interpret the nativity before 9am on Monday 14th December, so please do feel free shop them if your children have any inkling whatsoever of the plans and Mr McIntyre will issue forfeits accordingly!

Anti Bullying Week kicks off on Monday with Odd Socks Day! We would love children and staff to come to school in their zaniest odd socks on Monday. We’ll be taking photos and tweeting the best to enter the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s national competition. Winning schools will be announced on Friday 4th December. The lucky winning schools will receive a visit and performance from Andy and the Odd Socks. Click on the link and rock out to their great version of The Kids are United, especially for Anti Bullying Week 2020!

Warm Diwali wishes for fresh hopes, brighter days and new dreams, to families celebrating the Indian festival of lights which begins tomorrow. Diwali is a joyous celebration of the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance - something we can all get behind!

Salvation Army Christmas Gifts Appeal - The big-hearted Hillcrest community has risen to the challenge once again! Thank you to everyone who has sent in brand new toys to bring Christmas cheer to local children in families experiencing hardship.

Please keep them coming! There is a box for donations in each classroom.

Book bags - We've had a few exploding water bottles and squished fruit disasters in book bags this week which have ruined some school reading books. Please can we keep food and drinks out of book bags for the sake of our books? Thank you.

Pre-loved Uniform - It’s a shame that Friends couldn’t run their planned sale today because of the lockdown rules. If you need something urgently email the office and we’ll get it to you, if Friends have it in stock. The sale will be rescheduled, hopefully in December.

Parent Governor Election Result - Kate Lehane, who has a child in Yr 1, was the successful candidate. Her four year term of office officially started on 22nd October 2020. Thank you to everyone who engaged with the election process.

After school arrangements - Please can you remind your child in the morning if they have something on after school - Gators, Workshop, Matt’s sports clubs etc?

Yr 1 - Sorry! We’ve had reports from parents of both head lice and threadworm in the year group this week. You can find information about threadworms here and download our head lice letter here.

Masks - Please keep social distance and pop on a mask (unless you are exempt for medical reasons) at drop off and pick up, including Breakfast Club, sports clubs and Early-gators. Thank you.

Reading News - A massive congratulations to Leon in 1MH and Molly in 6RT who are this week's random winners of the 'I Read At Least Four Times This Week And An Adult Has Signed My Reading Book To Prove It' competition. They have won a personalised bookmark each. Keep reading everyone and next time it could be you!

Yr 6 Children! Our Podcast Needs YOU!

At the end of the term, we will be releasing the second episode of Hillcrest’s highly acclaimed podcast ‘From the Crest of the Hill’ and we are looking for Yr 6 children to present the show!

2 x Presenters - Your role will be to introduce the show and to link together the different segments of the podcast. The presenters will be responsible for creating their own script and must be clear, confident speakers with lots of charisma… we’re looking for Hillcrest’s answer to famous duos, like Ant & Dec, Mel & Sue, Sooty and Sweep, Mr Boyle and Mr Taylor…

If you would like to be a presenter, show us what you’ve got by writing and recording a short piece about something that interests you. This should be recorded as an audio file which should be between one and two minutes long.

1x Interviewer - Your role will be to record an interview with a child from our school who comes from a different country, finding out about their homeland and getting them to teach us all a few words and phrases. The interviewer will be responsible for planning their interview questions and will also need to be a clear and confident speaker who is charismatic and friendly. Think Lorraine Kelly or Graham Norton… Could you be who we’re looking for?

If you would like to be an interviewer, impress us by preparing recording a short interview with a friend or family member about a topic of your choosing. This should be recorded as an audio file which should be about two minutes long.

If you'd like to apply for any of these roles, email your audio files to (under the subject ‘Podcast Audio’). These need to be received by the end of the day on Monday 23rd November.

Mr Wilson and Mr Mac will be choosing three children for this episode of the Podcast, and these will change each episode, so if you’re not chosen this time, you may get to do it another time instead!

Good Luck!

Social Page - If you have photos, video, suggestions or links to share or would like us to post a birthday message for a child, email Juliet at Check out the video of Peter, from Ms Ackerman’s class, giving it the full Ginger Baker on his drum kit here. Impressive!

Pumpkin competition correction - The winning 'Day of the Dead' pumpkin was at 15 Bayham Road, not 12 as announced, but the prize found its way to the right house anyway.
