Mailbag 13 September 2021
Well, what can I say about the amazing weather we had last week, as soon as we were back in school? Typical!
We are thrilled to bits to see all your children back in school. There really has been a fantastic buzz about the place.
We would also very much like to see you all in school, and I am sure you would like a look around and to see your child’s new classroom. With this in mind we have set up Curriculum Evenings for each year group, from 5.30 - 6.30pm on the following dates:
Rec Wednesday 6th October
Yr 1 Wednesday 29th September
Yr 2 Monday 20th September Yr 3 Monday 27th September Yr 4 Tuesday 21st September Yr 5 Thursday 23rd September
Yr 6 Wednesday 22nd September
This will be a chance for you to tour the school and gather in the large hall to hear about the school year, expectations, curriculum aims and priorities, homework etc. We will be asking you to socially distance and wear a mask.
I would like to draw your attention to the information that I sent out last week, detailing changes in the way schools are required to manage any cases of COVID, and the changes to the school arrangements. I will continue to monitor the local and national picture and make any changes necessary in line with our school contingency plan.
We have welcomed some new staff members this term and I would like to introduce them to you:
Nathan Redshaw, who did his PGCE placement with us a couple of years ago, joins us as a class teacher in Yr 1.
Early Years Practitioners Nandini Banerjee and Ingrid McNeilage will be working with Teacher Emily Howard (returning from maternity leave - welcome back) to support the children with additional needs in our Reception classes. Ingrid will also be a Yr 4 Teaching Assistant on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Teaching Assistants Ana Mendez Munos and Sharon Bains join the Yr 1 team as 1:1 support.
Teaching Assistants Ria Harding and Karis Reilly will be in Yr 4 and Yr 3 respectively. We also have a new cook - Jo Rendall now heads up the Chartwell’s kitchen team.
I am sure that you will welcome all our new staff to Hillcrest and wish them well in their new roles.
A warm welcome, too, to all the new families starting with us this term. Our new Reception children have started school this week, and I hope that our new children across the higher years are settling in. I’m sure that you will all thoroughly enjoy being part of our Hillcrest community.
Finally - We have a shiny new WEBSITE! www.hillcrest.bristol.sch.uk Let us know what you think.

A song to learn - We’re going to start our Celebration Assemblies with a bang this year, singing Celebration by Kool & the Gang. It would be great if the children could have a listen and get to know the song so we can really raise the roof! You can find the lyrics and a link to the official music video HERE.

Yr 1 Parents - As you know, over the next two terms we are developing a more play-based curriculum in Yr 1. Providing opportunities for children to access continuous provision eases the transition from Reception, supports independence, helps the children’s emotional welfare and wellbeing, develops key play skills and engages the children in their own interests.
We need your help! We would like to further develop our outdoor learning environment and are hoping you may have some resources you could donate. In particular we would like:
Pots, pans and cutlery A mud kitchen!
Watering cans Sand/water trays
Wood (all sizes)
Thank you in advance for your support. The Year One Team
