Mailbag 14 June 2021

Mailbag 14 June 2021

Class photos this Wednesday - Chantelle from Tempest will be here on Wednesday morning to take our class photos in the sunshine. Let’s see which class can look the smartest in their uniforms!

Saliva testing tomorrow morning - The next CoMMinS visit, for children and staff registered with the study, is first thing on Tuesday morning. Children from Yrs 2 and 3 will be giving their samples first so please finish breakfast and clean teeth before 8.30.

Medicines in school - If possible, please give your child any medicine they need before or after school. If it’s vital that they have a dose of a prescribed medication during school hours please fill in an Administration of Meds form - you can download a copy here or pick one up from the office. We have a small number of staff trained to give prescribed medicines. (There are special arrangements for children with asthma.)

We are not allowed to give non-prescribed medication such as Calpol, antihistamines - even cough sweets or sun cream. Please don’t send your child into school with these. You are welcome to pop in during the day to give them yourself - come to the office.

PRE LOVED SCHOOL UNIFORM COLLECTION & SALE - Friends will be collecting pre loved uniform on TUESDAY 15th JUNE (tomorrow!) from 08.30am at the main gates on School Road and Cemetery Road. Please only bring items that you would consider worthy of onward sale. Pop stained or tatty items in the recycling instead.

We will then hold a PRE LOVED SALE after school in the Key Stage 2 playground on Friday 18th June. Please bring change for ease of purchase and to limit hand to hand contact. Masks should be worn at all times and social distancing maintained. See you there! FRIENDS

Pride Month interviews - Would any more of our LGBT parents like to contribute to the special Pride month edition of our ‘From the Crest of the Hill’ podcast? The team would love to interview you, particularly about parenting. Drop an email to podcast@hillcrest.bristol.sch.uk if you’d like to be involved or find out more.

Focus on Friends of Hillcrest

We’ve been reading a copy of the Knowle Junior Mixed School’s annual magazine from July 1952. The Headmaster was quite robust on the subject of the PTA in his report...

“Membership is representative, but not as large as it should be. Apathy is one reason, another is that some parents find difficulty in attending meetings for domestic reasons. I urge these to join if only for the moral support it would give the committee who work so hard for the benefit of all the children in the school.”

The PTA Chairman talks about the well supported Socials, Whist Drives, Lectures and Film Shows they have held but she also mentions membership...

“Although our membership is up on last year we still are a long way behind, and I would sincerely ask all of you who are not members to send your membership fee of 2/- to Mr. Down at the school, or to any member of Committee. This covers both husband and wife and in addition to helping the Association you will receive certain concessions at the various functions which are to be held shortly.”

Friends of Hillcrest won’t be demanding two bob or inviting you to a Whist Drive any time soon! But some things don’t change - the work the Friends do to raise funds, for the benefit of all the children, still falls on the shoulders of a tiny group of parents.

As things start to open up and Friends can plan and run events again, it would be great to have more shoulders to the wheel and hands on deck! The Friends Committee are not a secret cabal, privy to arcane fundraising knowledge - they’re just Hillcrest parents like the rest of us. And helping with events can be fun and a great way to get to know other parents at the school.

If you could lend a hand - whether it’s just helping for an hour at an event, coming along to a meeting, making a few phone calls or getting more involved - drop an e-mail to friendsofhillcrestfundraising@gmail.com so Friends can let you know what’s coming up and what help is needed.
