Happy holidays and best wishes for a better year to come!
I hope you and yours have
a restful, peaceful break.
News for everyone
Internet Support - We are committed to keeping children safe online in school through our filtering systems and discussions with the children about how to use the internet safely but over the holidays they may be spending more time online.
With this in mind, we are encouraging you to join https://nationalonlinesafety.com/enrol/hillcrest-primary - a place with a wealth of knowledge about internet safety, how to set up safety protocols, how to explore internet safety at home, where to go if things have gone wrong and information about a huge range of apps and games your child might be using, including Fortnite, Instagram, WhatsApp and Among Us.
Reading Eggs - Well done to Ario in Mya-Rose Craig class and Alexa in Amelia Earhart class who have won this term's Reading Eggs competition. They will both receive a £50 voucher for Storysmith - an independent book shop on North Street.
Regrettably, however, we have decided not to renew our subscription to Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress, which ran out this week. Fewer than 10% of the school are using the program regularly and more than 50% are not using it at all, so we just cannot justify the significant annual outlay.
If you would like to continue using Reading Eggs, you can visit their website and purchase an individual license for £6.99 per month.
Alternatively, there are lots of great reading and phonics websites out there that you can access for free, or have free resources available, such as:
Teach Your Monster to Read
Storyline - featuring accomplished actors and actresses reading some of their favourite children’s books. Each story comes with a free Activity Guide and can be viewed on YouTube or SchoolTube. https://storylineonline.net/
Storynory - featuring a collection of original, fairytale, and classic children’s audio stories.
Love Reading 4 Kids - Expert recommendations and opening extracts of books
Booktrust - Suggested books for children, advice on how to read with your child, book lists, fun games, competitions to win free books, Children's Book Club etc
You can find a selection of other reading websites here:
And, of course, the Hillcrest Bookbarn is open before and after school daily.
‘Flu Vaccination - The Sirona team will be in school on Thursday 6th January to give the nasal spray ‘flu vaccine. If you haven’t completed the online form to tell them whether or not you want your child to be given the vaccine in school please do so by 4th January at the latest.
Reception’s dressing up box is empty! If anyone is having a clear-out after Christmas, Reception would be very glad of any unwanted or outgrown dressing up clothes.
Survive and thrive this winter - It’s been a tough two years for everyone. Off The Record have compiled some great advice and resources to support mental health that you can download HERE. Though it’s been put together with young people in mind, it’s packed with self-care tips and resources relevant to all of us, and includes links to resources and support aimed at parents.
