Mailbag 18 February 2022
I do hope that you have weathered today’s storm without mishap!
We look forward to welcoming the children back on Monday 28th February and seeing parents, in person again, at one of our Parents Evenings in the second week back.
Have a great half term break.
News for Everyone
Parents Evenings for all year groups will be in person, on Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th March, between 4pm and 7pm. Visit https://hillcrest.schoolcloud.co.uk/ to book an appointment with your child’s teacher.
From the Crest of the Hill - A big thank you to everyone who has listened to our terrific school podcast this week... it's been our most-listened-to episode so far! If you've not had a chance to listen yet, today's the perfect day for it! Snuggle up from that nasty wind with a cup of cocoa and give it a listen: https://www.hillcrest.bristol.sch.uk/podcasts-from-the-crest-of-the-hill/
Well done to all the children who took part in the Podcast Password competition - we've had 130 entries! The raffle for Freedog tickets will now take place during the first week of term.
Meanwhile, huge congratulations to the children in Endeavour House who have won the house competition - you get to wear non-school uniform on the first day back after the holiday!
My Great Hillcrest Spelling Saga - This week the children sat their second level checks and did us all proud. Lots of children are moving on to new levels and new zones, and there are new high scores left, right and centre!
Children will receive their new sets of spellings on the first Monday back and teachers will be checking in with words from Section A on Friday, March 4th.
If children want to make a head start on their spellings over half-term, they can find their level here: https://www.hillcrest.bristol.sch.uk/spelling-saga/
Children’s University activities are for everyone! There are lots of challenges and ideas for things to do over half term here whether your child is already enrolled in the CU or not.
Celebrating World Book Day’s 25th Anniversary!
On Thursday 3rd March we would love each year group to dress in a colour theme:
Year R in red
Year 1 in yellow and/or orange
Year 2 in purple and/or pink
Year 3 in white
Year 4 in blue - See note below under News for Year Groups
Year 5 in green and/or brown
Year 6 in black and/or white
On Friday 4th March the children are invited to DRESS UP as their favourite book character.
We'll also be launching our weekend-long, Totterdown-wide Hillcrest Book Barn Readathon! Download a sponsorship form for your child here and the full timetable for our celebrations here. (Also sent in a separate email earlier today.)
Thread Worm - We have had several cases reported in Reception and Yr 4 this week. It’s the second time since Christmas for one of the Reception children. They’re super-easy to spread, so please be on the look-out for symptoms. Luckily, they’re also easy to treat - just one small tablet, available over the counter from pharmacies. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/threadworms/
Dinner Money - You’ve been brilliant at keeping dinner money accounts in credit this term, without us needing to chase! Thank you. It makes a real difference.
Random Acts of Kindness Day - A BIG thank you to the Well-Being Committee for decorating and delivering pots of spring bulbs to every classroom! They really brightened up everyone’s day.

Yr 4 on World Book Day, Thursday 3rd March we’ll be going on our visit to Ashford Water Treatment Works. Our colour theme is blue and we would still love the children to come in wearing blue, if possible, but topped off with their logo-ed school cardie or jumper. Thank you.
