Mailbag 5 November 2021

Following our fantastic Spelling Day today, all the children should have brought home a very important Spelling Saga map and their Avatar. You can watch a video telling you all about our exciting new spelling initiative HERE.

Thank you to Mr Mac and Mr Wilson for their hard work creating it, and to the whole staff team for getting behind today’s big spelling launch.

News for everyone

Reading Eggs Competition - To add an extra dash of excitement to the children’s Reading Eggs / Eggspress journey, we are launching our very own Hillcrest-exclusive Reading Eggs competition. The aim is to complete as many maps as they can before Monday, 13th December. See HERE for more details.

The winners, one from Rec-Yr 2 and one from Yr 3-5, will be the children who have progressed furthest on their Reading Eggs/Eggspress journey. They will receive a £50 voucher from Storysmith - an independent book shop on North Street.

Future Stars extra capacity - They have recruited two new coaches to their Hillcrest team, Emma and Sheena. From 15th November there will be three members of staff each day, so they will be able to offer 45 places. Booking for the additional places will open at midday on 12th November.

First Aid and Medications - We are introducing a new system, Medical Tracker, that will send you an email whenever we give your child first aid or medication (eg. their inhaler) so you know exactly what has happened. This will replace the paper ‘First Aid’ slips we send home at the moment. It will also alert the adults working with your child in school, so, for instance, the class teacher will know if your child felt unwell or hurt themselves at lunchtime. More information next week.

Seesaw is the main line of communication between class teachers and parents, eg, if the teacher wants the children to bring something into school and other class-specific reminders. Please try to check it regularly.

Paying for trips and visits - If your child is benefiting from any of the following and you haven’t got around to paying yet, please can we ask you do so? They are all on Gateway and you can find the letters about them here.

  • Yr 4 Egyptian Escape Room
  • Yrs 5 & 6 Travelling Light theatre company performance in school
  • Yr 2 SS Great Britain trip
  • Yr 2 Redcatch Community Garden visits
  • Yr 6 Swimming

Paying for trips is voluntary, and no child will miss out if their parents don’t pay. However, we do rely on parents’ goodwill and we know that you are all aware of how very tight school budgets are. The money we spend covering short-falls on trips could be much better used elsewhere. We may be faced with an unpalatable choice for future trips - either cancelling if not enough people have paid, or raising the price to make sure the cost of the trip is covered.

We keep the cost of trips as low as we can and there is a 20% reduction for children on Pupil Premium (if you think your child may be eligible please enquire in the office).

Congratulations to this term’s first Celebration Award winners!

Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal - Children from Yr 6 will be selling poppies and poppy merchandise in the playground before and after school and during break and lunchtime, starting from Monday.

Bikes and Scooters - Please remind children not to ride their bikes or scooters in the playground, except during the Freewheel Friday morning session? Can we also ask you to leave the playground promptly once you’ve collected your child from school or Future Stars? Thank you.

Friends News

Hillcrest Comedy Club - We are happy to announce that tickets for the Comedy Night on 18th November are now on sale here:

We respectfully ask that those attending have been double vaccinated and please wear your facemasks until seated. The hall will be ventilated at regular intervals so please wrap up warm! Over 18s only.

Well, it was a tough call this year. Somerset Road lived up to its reputation of putting on some amazing displays and, after much deliberation, FIRST PRIZE goes to WILF and XANDER (3EN) (1JF). What an effort, cloaking their house in a giant cobweb and creating a spooky atmosphere for the trick or treaters with a smoke machine! Unclear who was having more fun – kids or adults! Congratulations, a £100 family portrait gift voucher will be heading your way.

Very close second prize goes to ROXY & MARLY (3NA) (RLN) with their unbelievably spooky haunted forest display and EDEN in 2KL for her very unwelcoming BEWARE front door display! Book Vouchers will be heading your way.

Thanks to everyone who entered. A great effort all round.
