All about homework at Hillcrest

At Hillcrest we believe homework is an important part of the learning process. We offer a balanced diet of homework and this is reflected by a mix of spellings, consolidation tasks, reading, questions and projects. We want our children to try out different ideas by giving them options for how they present information: make a video, write a dialogue, provide an information blog, act out a scene etc.

Yr1-6 Homework Task – Each week on a Friday, teachers set a task appropriate to their year group on your child’s Seesaw Learning Journal. The task is also set on the homework page of our website. Children’s responses to this homework can be shared on Seesaw or brought into class if the children prefer.

Reception - Children use ‘Tapestry’, an online learning journal.

Yr2-6 Weekly spellings - Teachers will send out ten spellings each week on a Friday for Yrs 2 - 6. These will be on your child’s ‘Seesaw’ Learning Journal and on the website under the ‘Homework’ tab. The children will take part in a test the following Friday. Please practise these ten spellings at home. The spellings are also displayed daily at the main gate and you will also see a weekly spelling challenge set by Mr McIntyre.

Reception-Yr6 Reading Books - Each morning and afternoon, children will be able to change their reading book at the Pop-Up Bookbarn in the Key Stage 1 playground. Every child needs to leave school each afternoon with one reading book in their bookbag. Please ensure this book is returned when you have finished with it.

Reading Eggs - An exciting, new, online reading resource designed to engage and motivate readers. Each child has a log in. On the site they will be able to access lots of different reading challenges and games many of which are related to comprehension.

All children have a  Mathletics/Spellodrome log ins. There is one log-in for both sites.

Mathletics - Children will be free to explore the site and pick the topics that interest and support them if they would like. The teachers will not be setting specific tasks this year.

Spellodrome - Teachers will list twenty spellings linked to the class enquiry and referred to throughout the term. Again, in the same way as Mathletics, children are free to choose activities independently.

Term 2, 4 and 6 Small dish/ Large Plate Challenge – Reception – Yr6 Children are invited to tackle a range of questions, tasks and projects related to their enquiry or a theme. These range from one-off challenges to these which may take a number of weeks. The children share and discuss their homework in class with their friends and the class teacher at the end of term.
