Mailbag 13 February 2020  Plain text version for Googl Translate

Hasn’t Term 3 flown by? It will be Spring before we know it. School will be closed for staff training on Monday 24th February so Term 4 begins for the children on Tuesday 25th. Happy holidays!

Our Sports for Schools Challenge - Mr Boyle has finally finished counting the sponsorship money. What a herculean task!

The children have raised somewhere in the region of £3,150!

This figure doesn’t yet include sponsorship paid on line, and there are still a few more payments to come into school. Thank you to the whole Hillcrest community for supporting this amazing result!

From the grand total, £1 per child goes to cover the base cost of running the scheme. The rest of the money is split 60/40:  Hillcrest gets 60% to spend on promoting physical activity and well-being in school; 40% goes to Sports for Schools to help fund the athletes and the scheme.

Apologies from Mr Boyle - Because it has taken so long to count all that money, the children will get their wristbands and posters in the first week back after half-term, instead of this week.

Reading Open Doors Day - You can download the slides from Mr Macintyre’s talk about how we approach reading at Hillcrest here.

Contacting teachers - According to the Department of Education, teachers work an average of 54.4 hours per week. Maintaining a healthy work/life balance is a constant challenge. Whilst the Hillcrest team are absolutely dedicated to the children’s welfare, they should not be regarded as ‘on tap’ at all hours of the day or night. Please do not email your child’s teacher directly. Emails should always be sent via the school address, school@hillcrest.bristol.sch.uk, marked for the teacher’s attention. Your message will be forwarded and responded to during working hours. Thank you.

Term 4 Enrichment Clubs - Don’t forget to book places before the first session!

There are some great school-run clubs next term. They’ll get booked up quickly so don’t delay!

  • Greet the Sun Yoga Club for Yrs 3 - 6 from 8.00 - 8.45 on Monday mornings with Mrs Howard - what a lovely way to start the week!
  • Gymnastics Club for Yrs 3 - 6 after school on Mondays, with a professional gymnastics coach. This club was very popular last term so may book up fast.
  • Yrs 5 & 6 Running Squad - Sign up for the trials on Wed 26th February. We have lots of boys signed up already. We’d love to have some girls in the squad too!
  • Minecraft Club with Mr Barham after school on Tuesdays (age 9+ or at parents’ discretion). There are still a few places available.
  • Boys’ Basketball for Yrs 3 & 4 on Wednesday mornings.
  • Girls’ Basketball for all ages, on Thursday Mornings.
  • Sewing Club for Yrs 3 - 6 with Mrs Flook after school on Thursdays. Starting with basic stitches and building up to a ‘make’ to take home. There are only 10 places, so grab one quick!
  • Girls’ Football for Yrs 3 - 6 on Friday Mornings. By popular demand, so roll up girls!
  • Spread the Happiness Club for Yrs 1 & 2 - games, activities, music and mindfulness with Mrs Newstead, to promote well-being, resilience and kindness. A happy way to round off the week!

You can download the full Enrichment Programme for next term, including all the clubs run by outside providers and details of how to book, here.

Yrs 5 & 6 Running Squad Trials date change - Third time lucky! Mr Boyle had moved the trials to Tuesday 3rd March but Yr 5 will be out on their Harry Potter trip that day. The trials will now be on Wednesday 26th February (though the squad will meet on Tuesday mornings for the rest of the term). If you have already booked a place there is no need to re-book for the new date.

Hillcrest Harriers have won another football match, this time against Oasis Connaught. You can read the match report here.

Dressing Up for World Book Day on Thursday 5th March - It’s the second week back after the holiday so we thought you might appreciate a heads-up. The dressing up theme this year is My Favourite Illustrated Character - anything goes, from Hairy Maclary to The BFG!

The Travelling Books Book Fair will be in school for a week from the first Thursday back, 27th February.

Don’t spread the bugs - If your child vomits or has diarrhoea they must stay off school until at least 48 hours after the last time they were sick or had a loose poo. Tummy bugs spread very easily in school, particularly when a child is sick in the classroom. (See NHS guidance here. Did you know that you should not swim in a public pool for two weeks after a tummy bug?)

WWF Fundraiser - Thank you for supporting the cake sale organised by a group of friends in Yr 5 who wanted to show Australia’s wildlife some love. They raised £107 which they have already donated to the WWF! Well done!

Yr 5 & 6 Disco is on the first Friday back, 28th February 6.30 - 8.00. Tickets will be on sale in the playground and on the door. £4, including drinks and an ice lolly.
