Mailbag 26 April 2021 Plain text version for Google Translate
A very warm welcome back to school to you all. I hope that you enjoyed the Easter break and that you were able to take the opportunity to meet with friends and family in open spaces and gardens. It does feel that things are edging towards a little more normality and as the weather continues to improve, the sunshine really helps to lighten the mood!
At the moment, there are very few amendments to the guidance for schools and we will continue to implement the COVID-19 measures that we have in place. This includes the staggered start and end to the school day and the requirement for adult visitors to wear face coverings when entering the school premises.
This term we will be introducing a 'Pupil Voice' assembly every Thursday. This is the chance for a child or group of children to inform the rest of the school about something they feel passionate about. The assembly will be available for parents to watch as well.
Parents’ Evenings - Click here to book an appointment with your child’s teacher at our online Parents’ Evenings on Tuesday 4th and Thursday 6th May.
Super Spellers - Watch Mr Mac’s first Super Spellers video, packed with tips and ideas to help children, across all the year groups, get to grips with frequently used words and tricky spellings: https://youtu.be/nggfaHnBfyo
Reading Celebration - https://youtu.be/fzBSADWhZFk
CoMMinS Study - The next saliva sampling session will be on the morning of 5th May. If your child is already registered you don’t need to do anything. They will automatically be included.
The final cut off for registering new children to take part in this important study on Covid in schools is midnight on Wednesday 28th April. You can read about the study and how to register your child here.
Yr 2 - We would like the children to bring in an old pair of tights to make grass head babies. See letter below.
Recycling Fundraiser - Friends of Hillcrest are collecting various items for recycling, via Recycling for Good Causes. If you have items to donate please bring them in to school this Friday. Friends are collecting the following:
- Jewellery - Gold and silver, including damaged items, costume jewellery and watches
- Mobile phones, cameras and gadgets - phones, video cameras, digital and old film cameras, sat navs, game consoles, games and accessories, iPods, MP3 players, tablets
- Banknotes and coins - any currency UK or foreign of any age, unchangeable currency

Dress Up for Digits on NSPCC Number Day, 7th May - We’ll be doing fun maths activities and asking pupils and staff to wear an item of clothing with a number on it and give a suggested donation of £2. This can be a sports shirt or cap, even a onesie. Or why not get more creative and dress up as a dice or calculator? You can donate direct to the NSPCC via our just Giving page:
Hillcrest has links with the NSPCC because we access the Speak Out Stay Safe online programme and resources.
A Year 6 Family Camp to Woodlands Theme Park is being organised by parents for 9th -11th July. Woodlands is a very quaint theme park (nothing like Alton Towers!) and is small enough for the children to visit independently while adults relax at the campsite, or elsewhere, as long as there’s an adult with responsibility for your child on site somewhere. As well as small rides ideal for this age group, it has an indoor play area, a boating lake and animals to visit. The park is also close to other nice places in Devon e.g. Totnes, and there are lovely beaches within half an hour’s drive if theme parks aren’t your/your child’s thing.
It would be lovely to have as many of the year group there as possible, especially since the children are missing out on camp. The cost, if 10+ families come, per unit (includes up to 2 adults and 2 kids) is £76 without electric hook up, £85 with, including theme park access for all, for both days. Extra kids are £6 each per night. The cost will come down further if there are 20+ units.
If you’d like to come, please email me on email@example.com by Mon 3rd May with details of your party - Type of unit i.e. tent, caravan, van etc., size of unit (lengths of caravans & vans, widths and lengths of tents in metres), whether you want electricity, number of adults and kids, if you're bringing a gazebo/ awning/ pup tent or dog, as I'll need to work out payments and collect money. If we have fewer than 10 families the cost will be £114.
A plea from the Yr 6 Leavers Fundraising Team - For children in Yr 6, the final year of primary school is both a special and an emotional one. As their time at primary school nears an end there are usually so many things to look forward to.
For Hillcrest’s Class of 2021, things have not been easy. They’ve had to choose secondary schools without being able to visit them; they’ve missed a lot of Yr 6 in the classroom, coping with two year group closures, as well as the lockdown. They’ve also had the devastating news that Year 6 Camp, something they’ve looked forward to for years, has had to be cancelled.
Every year the parents of Yr 6 children raise funds for a Leavers Party and some extra goodies (this year we were planning to give each child a hoodie and yearbook) to mark the end of their time at Hillcrest and we would still LOVE to provide these things for every child in the year, not just those who can afford it. Normally we would be doing lots of fundraising events but, as these can’t happen now, we’re asking our wonderful Hillcrest community if you could consider donating what you might have spent at cake/ice-cream/book/plant sales etc. to support us in achieving this goal.
We know this is a big ask, there is so much need in society currently. However, if you would like to contribute, any amount will be so gratefully received, and you can do so by following this link: https://paypal.me/pools/c/8yOzImzwe1. To say thank you we will enter you into a prize draw for a bottle of fizz and a box of chocolates. Simply add your child’s name and class in the comment box to enter.
