All PE kits in this Friday please - We’re looking forward to welcoming top athlete Jack Rutter to Hillcrest. He'll be leading the whole school in a sponsored Fitness Circuit, followed by a motivational talk and a Q & A session. You can watch a video about Jack’s journey from intensive care to England International here.
Children brought home a paper sponsorship form a couple of weeks ago and you can also sponsor them on line here www.sportsforschools.org. Much of the money raised will be used to promote physical activity at Hillcrest and a proportion will go to support GB athletes, including our Paralympians. Please ensure that sponsorship forms and money are returned to the school office, in a sealed envelope, by next Friday, 7th Feb, a week after the event.
Explorer Dome Workshops - Next week Reception and Yr 5 will enter the huge Explorer Dome, which takes up half of our big hall, to explore our planet, moon, sun and solar system and learn about the constellations. These terrific half-day workshops tie in with our enquiry “What does earth look like from the Solar System?” and are amazing value for only £3 per child. If you haven’t already done so, please pay on Gateway today. We haven’t had many payments in yet and it would be a great shame if we had to cancel.
Reminder - Bedtime Story Evening for Reception and Yr 1 at 6pm this Thursday, 30th January. This is a free event. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Siblings are welcome too. Listen to stories, enjoy a hot chocolate and possibly do some stargazing too (clouds permitting!). Children are welcome to come in their pyjamas - bring a cushion or a beanbag, if you have one. If anyone has a telescope we could borrow please let us know!
Parent Governor Vacancy - The governing board has recently recruited a Co-Opted Governor to support its financial management responsibilities. In a change to the person spec. in last Friday’s Mailbag, the board would now particularly welcome applications from parents with knowledge and experience of buildings/infrastructure management and Health and Safety legislation.
Allan Schiller piano concert - It was great to see so many Hillcrest families enjoying Saturday’s recital at Totterdown Baptist Church. The focus this time was on Chopin and Allan opened with a dazzling performance of ‘The Minute Waltz’, well-known as the Just a Minute theme tune on Radio 4. There were a couple of Aaron Copland pieces for good measure (including a duet with ex-Hillcrest parent, Rustom Battiwalla) and we learned some of the terms used in music for different speeds and dynamics. Allan’s next concert, on Saturday 21st March, will be Prokofiev’s piece for children, Peter and the Wolf which is sure to draw the crowds! More details nearer the time.
Hillcrest on TV news - If you missed Mr Mac and some of the children from Yr 1 on the HTV news on National Handwriting Day you can watch it here.
Primary Engineer Leaders Awards 2019-2020 - We would love some help from anyone involved in engineering in any way.
Look out for your next Mailbag on Friday.
