Mailbag 15 January 2021  Plain text version for Google Translate

I hope you have all had a fantastic week. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening and looking at all of your learning responding to last week's birdy challenge. I, for one, feel better informed and can at least now identify one bird call.

I want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all the children, both at home and at school - you are working your socks off! (We are slightly worried we are going to run out of space on Tapestry, Seesaw and our email servers, what with all the amazing learning that you lot are producing!)

I also want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all our staff, both at home and in school, who are showing lots of innovation and adding new strings to their bows as they work hard to produce fun and engaging home learning.

But, most of all, I want to say a humongous ‘thank you’ to all our parents and carers. We know that juggling jobs, younger siblings, Covid worries etc with home learning is not easy. All of you are doing the best you can and we appreciate all the support you are giving us.

In an ideal world, we would obviously like the children to complete all of their learning each day, but we completely understand that for many of you that is simply not possible. We urge you just to do the best you can.

Please do not feel guilty if there are some days when you don’t get around to all the tasks. Please do not feel guilty if there are times when you think you need to park home learning for a day so you can go on a long family walk or have a go at learning some new skill. Just go for it, knowing we’ll still be here for you when you get back.

We understand some of you might find posting publicly on Seesaw daunting but let us reassure you that each class page will always be a positive place, where teachers and pupils celebrate learning. All the children are on their own learning journey and each of their successes are equally worthy.

However, if you or your child are feeling shy about posting on Seesaw, you can always email their work directly to their class teacher instead.

From next week, all our English and maths activities will be accompanied by teacher videos so you get a better understanding about how we approach lessons in school.

Remember we are here to support you, if you are struggling or unsure about something do not suffer in silence, let your class teacher or Tina know. We will get through this together.

Watch this week’s Celebration Assembly here.

Flu Vaccine without pork gelatine - The Sirona Immunisation Team is now able to offer the Inactivated Flu Vaccine to children from Reception to Year 7 who are unable to accept porcine derived products and declined the nasal spray vaccine. Parents can ring the number on the letter to book their children in to community based clinics. Download the letter from Sirona here.

PE at Home

We are excited to announce that every child will now have access to Jasmine, a digital PE platform that we use in school to deliver fun and effective PE lessons.

Your child's teacher will email or post on Seesaw the username and password for your child to log on to Jasmine. There is a short video that will explain how to do this and how to use this resource.

We know that lots of you have been keeping active and doing a whole host of other things, so this is just one more tool in the chest to encourage your child to stay active. As we all know, physical health is linked to mental health and it is crucial that children are given the opportunity to participate in Physical Education, especially during Lockdown.

Your child's teacher will explain how they would like you to use this resource, it may be on a particular day they ask you to do a certain exercise or theme, or it might be that they ask for evidence of your child using the resource at any point during the week.

The great news is that Jasmine has been tailor-made for parents at home, so it is super simple to use.

Look out for your child's log in details from their class teacher.

Covid Research - now open to children attending school from Yr 2 to Yr 6

As you may know, Hillcrest is taking part in an important public health research study of Covid-19 transmission in schools. University of Bristol researchers are helping children and staff to collect non-invasive saliva samples, roughly once a month, which are then tested for Covid-19 infection in a University lab.

We are continuing to take part in this study throughout lockdown, and children from Yrs 2,3,4,5 & 6 who are still attending school are now invited to participate.

The next visit of the study team is on Tuesday 26 January. If your child is already signed up to the study, there is no need to do anything further. If you haven't yet signed up to the study but would be interested in your child taking part, please watch this YouTube video with them:

Then please read the study information sheet - there are two sheets, one for parents and a quick-read simplified version which you might like to share with your child. If you wish to go ahead and enrol your child, provide your consent by visiting this link before midday on Thursday 21 January:

The Social Page on our website has really sprung into life again! Check it out here. Email anything you would like to share on the page to Juliet at jfleming@hillcrest.bristol.sch.uk and don’t forget to let her know if your child has a birthday coming up so we can put up a virtual card for them on the day.
