Reception 2014/15 Term 5
Welcome back to Term 5
This term our topic is on Dinosaurs and Mini beasts. We’re beginning with dinosaurs and have booked an Educational Visit and a visitor to support our learning. If the children have any information books or resources about dinosaurs and fossils we’d love to see them. Later in the term we will be looking at mini beasts and exploring our local environment to see what mini beasts we can find. Our tadpoles are continuing to grow into froglets and we’ll also be setting up vivariums to care for any mini beasts we find on our local environment walks.
Our ‘Talk for Writing’ story this term is Peter and the Wolf and we have already started to learn to re-tell the story with actions. As Peter and the Wolf also has a wonderful musical theme we will be exploring orchestral instruments and composing some of our own music for the animals in the story. Please see the Topic Overview for more information about our learning intentions this term.
Forest School: Children in the Yellow Team will have 4 sessions of Forest School this term in Arnos Vale. A letter has already been sent out detailing the dates. Parent helpers are always needed for this activity so please volunteer for one or more of the Monday afternoon sessions if you are able to.
Special Person Time: Please could children bring a favourite non-fiction book instead of a toy when it is their turn to show and tell,
Monday 4th May : Bank Holiday
Tuesday 5th May: Inset Day. School closed for children
Friday 8th May: Visit to Bristol Museum to look at the Geology and Dinosaur exhibits.
We have secured funding to make this a free visit for the children but in order to keep coach costs down we need 10 parent helpers who are able to make their own way to the Museum to meet us there at 10am. We have booked one 70 seat coach but need more than the 10 adult spaces available on the coach to make the visit viable. Please let us know if you may be able to help with the visit. We will leave the Museum at 11.30am and be back in school ready for lunch at 12noon. A letter with more details will be sent out next week.
Tuesday 19th May: We have booked a Fossil Expert to visit us in school. He has been really engaging on previous visits and the children will love handling the fossil exhibits and learning more about prehistoric life.
Thank you for encouraging your children to come into class independently in the mornings. We are using the calm and settled start to the day to practise handwriting and other useful learning.
With very best wishes
