Local History Documentaries

These documentaries are the result of a considerable learning journey. It all began in class, where we researched and organised significant global and national events from our time period: 1901-1920. We then homed in on our local area. We began by comparing local maps from the present day and 1904, using photocopies of the originals and the website Know Your Place.

Next, we went on a walk around the local area, stopping at four specific locations, where we were presented with a photograph from 1904, prompting much discussion about how each place had changed over more than a century. This observation and critical thinking task prompted lots of questions, which directly informed research sessions back in class.

We then watched a few clips of existing history documentaries to get a flavour of what we were aiming for. In our groups, we then planned and scripted our films. As well as the content, we thought creatively about how best to use the camera, and subsequently added lots of technical film vocabulary to our script, such as pan and close up.

Following our filming sessions, we were taught how to edit our footage on iMovie. Once we had completed the cutting and positioning of all our individual clips, we explored additional features such as changing the image to black and white or sepia and adding background music.

We hope you enjoy all our hard work.
