Welcome to Term 1

Hello and welcome to Year 1.

Our team this year is:

Jane Goodall Class – Mrs Flook (class teacher), Miss Hayward (full time TA), Mrs Cooke (TA on Tuesday and Wednesday), Miss Harding (1:1 TA)

Louis Braille Class – Mr Redshaw (class teacher), Mrs Wade (TA on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday), Mrs Cooke (TA on Thursday), Miss Hough (1:1 TA)

We have really enjoyed the last few days with the children and are delighted to see they are already settling in to their new classes. We are very excited about the journey ahead and about getting to know your children even better. Our priority at the moment is to ensure that all children settle back into life at school, making a smooth transition from Reception to Year 1. With this in mind we will be adopting a more EYFS approach to our learning this term, with plenty of opportunities for the children to learn through play.

Each class is named after a positive role model, which is a great stimulus for interesting class discussions on global issues that affect us all.

1JF - Jane Goodall

Ethologist, primatologist, anthropologist and a UN Messenger of Hope.

1NR – Louis Braille

Demonstrated great perseverance and resilience, creating a system for blind people to read that is still in use almost 200 years later.

Key Information

This year, Tapestry will be replaced by Seesaw as a way of observing their learning in school and for you to share learning from home.  You should have already received a QR code giving you access to our class page.  Any questions or problems, please speak to your class teacher.

Mr Redshaw is now in his second year as an ECT (Early Career Teacher), and will be covered in class every other Friday afternoon by Miss Wilson.

For our first enquiry ‘Who Helps Us?’, we would love your child to bring in three photos of a family member at different stages of life – as a child, as a teenager and a recent photo.  We need these by Tuesday 13th September, and they can be emailed to your class teacher if you prefer. We are also looking for some volunteers to come in on the afternoon of Tuesday September 20th to talk to the children about the jobs they do. If you are interested, please let your class teacher know asap.

We have also introduced the children to the Great Hillcrest Spelling Saga!  Your children should have come home with their spellings for this term.  If you want further information about the Saga, please following the link here to our school website.  Spelling Saga | Hillcrest Primary School

If you have any worries or questions about anything at all, we are always happy to talk to you at the end of the day or, if that isn’t possible, do not hesitate to contact us via email (, or through the school office.

Here’s to a great Year 1.

Kind Regards

The Year 1 team
