What are we learning this term?
We will continue to use the Little Wandle programme, which the children are familiar with from Reception. Children will come home with a new phonically decodable book from their class teacher every Friday, which they will need to bring into school with their reading record EVERY DAY for group reading sessions. These sessions will develop children’s decoding skills, fluency & expression as well as prompting comprehension discussions. Reading at home is incredibly important for their development in this area, and children should read with an adult at home at least four times a week, recording it in their reading record.
Our first exciting cross-curricular enquiries: Who helps us? This will be explored through a variety of activities where the children will take on the roles of Historian, Author and Artist. We will introduce children to the concept of timelines along with the meanings of past, present and future, as we take a close look at the life story of Princess Campbell, a significant individual from Bristol.
As Mathematicians, we will be covering Place Value to 10 followed by Addition and Subtraction within 10. It is crucial for the children to be secure with these aspects of maths before moving on to other topics. We’ll be introducing the children to different strategies to help with problem solving.
As Authors we will be focusing on writing simple sentences using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops correctly. We will use The Jolly Postman as our first text to help us explore interesting character descriptions.
In computing, we will be looking at what an algorithm is, and having a go at creating some simple ones. Our PSHE focus for this term is ‘Being me in my world’ and will allow us to have a conversation with the class about what makes each of us unique.
The children will have art lessons with Ms Sharples on Thursday mornings.
