Hillcrest Primary School is a Bristol Local Authority controlled school for children aged 4 to 11. It was first opened in 1877 and typified the architectural style of the age. It was remodelled in 2000-2001 to form the primary school we have today. Hillcrest Primary is a vibrant school which reflects the diverse social, cultural and creative mix of our surrounding community. Children are well-behaved with positive attitudes to learning. There is a dedicated, talented staff team who enjoy the challenge and success of developing all our children as self-disciplined, motivated learners capable of fulfilling their potential. There are fourteen classrooms, two libraries, areas for music and pottery including a kiln, as well as two large halls with a removable stage, theatre lighting and a sound system. The halls are used for many purposes including Assemblies, PE, performances, music, dance and drama, school lunches, `Friends of the School' functions, Breakfast and After-school Club and other after-school activities as well as lettings. Outside, the large urban playground is equipped for basketball, short tennis, netball, football, quick cricket, and rounders and is also marked for other games using small equipment. Next to this are two smaller playgrounds bordered by flowers, shrubs and trees. There is a woodland area as well as equipment for climbing and swinging. Each class has a small, productive allotment. We have achieved Activemark Gold and Healthy School Status to recognise our commitment to exercise, health and wellbeing. The school is justly proud of its caring and friendly atmosphere. We have a genuine `open door' policy where parents and carers are always welcome. We take pride in the fact that we are willing to examine and take part in projects which may benefit our children. Currently we are involved in several exciting local and national initiatives including work with the Avon Wildlife Trust to renovate a local park and international links with Kigumba Centre Primary School in Uganda. We regularly accept invitations from local and national arts, sport and cultural organisations, which involve the children in a range of activities. The children, parents and artists have designed and taken part in the production of the mural and mosaics which are features of the playground and school building. The children also take part in city-wide `Dance Days', musical productions and a variety of sporting activities. They benefit from visiting dance, drama, music and sporting professionals, as well as enjoying an annual Fair Trade conference with a local secondary school. The school has been awarded Artsmark Gold. Children have recently won a country-wide poetry competition and have had poems and stories published in newspapers and anthologies as well as work dramatically performed. We make innovative use of our urban playground to promote good health through sport and exercise. Our creative and hard-working staff team give their time to a range of extra-curricular and curriculum enriching activities, some of which are mentioned later in the prospectus. The school social calendar is packed with events such as carol singing, quizzes, social gatherings, drama productions, workshops and celebrations of various festivals, involving children, parents and carers, staff, governors and the local community. The annual Summer Fair is always greatly anticipated and well supported by the community around us. The winter Craft Fair provides a wonderful opportunity for Christmas shopping. We are proud to describe ourselves as a multi-cultural, multi-social and inclusive school, with children coming from our socially and culturally diverse community. We believe that it is this diversity that enriches and enhances this.
