Yr 3 2025/26
On our trip to Westonbirt, we learnt about what an arboretum is, and why it is important to look after trees. We used our booklets to identify lots of different species of trees as we walked (1km!) to the planting site. We then worked hard in our teams to plant trees. The damp weather did not dampen our spirit!
Andy, Sylvan’s dad, very kindly came in to talk to us about our enquiry ‘Being Healthy. He is a scientist focusing on chemistry and owns a company that does research into diabetes. Andy started by looking at some foods and had us guess how much carbohydrate, fibre, protein and fat was in each one, using his giant pie chart, then he showed the actual amounts. We explored broccoli, raisins, baked beans and a couple of others. We then created paper chains to represent different kinds of sugar within foods, and discussed how easy or difficult it was to break down each type. He explained how our bodies cope with the sugars we eat and how we need insulin to process it. People with diabetes either don't have enough insulin, or it doesn't work very well. We then played the first ever game of ‘Insulin Tag’ ! He burnt a jelly baby, showing how much sugar is in a single sweet. It was fascinating. Thank you very much, Andy. We learnt so much and had LOADS of fun.
Today we made pinhole cameras. It was really interesting to learn how our brain flips the images we see - if it didn’t, we would see everything upside down! We learnt at We the Curious that light travels in straight lines and our pinhole cameras proved that. We used our cameras outside, and could see the images upside down! We are going to keep them in the classroom to try again on a sunnier day, as it was more difficult to see when the sun went behind the clouds. ⛅️
Our trip to We the Curious
As Artists, Year 3 enjoyed sketching from observation. We looked at how shining a light on object from different angles creates different shadows.
We learnt about the different jobs and roles there are at the Community Garden, and how important each and every one is... from head gardener, to the person emptying the bins to the person making the coffee. Every role plays in a huge part in ensuring the garden runs like clockwork!
Our enquiry topic this term is ‘forces.’ Today we explored the force of friction. We measured how far a car would go down a ramp. We made sure it was a fair test by keeping all variables the same, and only changing the material of the ramp. The materials were carpet, wood, foam and sandpaper. We found out that the smoother the surface, the less friction there was, and therefore the further the car would go. We worked incredibly well together in our teams and had a great time being scientists!
We turned our classrooms and tables into stone age caves and created our own stone age-themed scenes using charcoal and chalks!
We explored the Community Garden. We looked at the different things they grow there - vegetables from chard to sprouts, as well as beautiful flowers. We found dahlias the size of our heads! We had a look around both polytunnels and found out they grow tromboncino. Tammy even wore one as a scarf! We also had a chance to taste some of the plants growing in the edible wall - chives were a firm favourite.
