Applying to Secondary School

Secondary school applications for children born between 1st September and 31st August 2013 (current Yr 6) are due by midnight on 31st October 2024.

How do I apply for a secondary school place?

The Bristol City Council website gives all the details on how and when to apply:

You will find information about each school, along with their admissions policy and over-subscription criteria here:

There are different types of school - church schools, foundation schools, academies, Free Schools and community secondaries - the admissions policy might be different for each school you put as a preference so it's important to check this carefully.

Some schools require their own forms to be completed as well as the common application form.  Make sure you check if this applies to the school(s) you are interested in.

Visit the schools.  All schools hold open days so look at their websites for details.

A school's prospectus and its website are useful sources of information.

You can name up to three school preferences.  We advise you to name more than one school.

It's easiest to apply on line.

Make sure you apply on time.

The deadline for applications for September 2025 is midnight on 31st October 2024.

  • There is no risk that your application will be lost in the post.

  • It is quick and easy to do.

Secondary School Open Days

Applications are now open for parents of Year Six pupils to choose a secondary school for your child. You have until midnight on 31st October to make that decision.

Over the coming weeks secondary schools are opening up their buildings for prospective pupils and their parents to look around the schools. While independent schools will have a separate process, the majority of families, who will be applying for a state-funded school, can apply via the Bristol City Council website.
