  • Guitar Club

    Mon 15 Mar 2021
Face to face guitar lessons will have to wait a while, but Hazel Winter's popular, small-group guitar tuition will be continuing after Easter on Zoom.

She has made this video to show what young guitarists learn in her sessions...

Contact Hazel at hazel@hazelwinter.co.uk for information and bookings.

    About Hazel:

She took her first musical steps clad in leopard skin playing guitar for all-girl R&B band Gorilla My Dreams.  Over the next few years she played with thrash psychobilly outfit The Rhythm Wreckers and alt-country all-girl band Scouting For Boys.  She toured with Bristol’s Blue Aeroplanes in 1991-2, playing on Glastonbury Pyramid stage and headlining Reading Festival.

Hazel’s solo debut album Put Away the Sharp Knives was released on Bristol-based independent label Clearwater at the end on 2000, and met with instant national critical acclaim.  Produced, overdubbed and mixed by John Parish (P.J.Harvey, Eels, Tracy Chapman) and Adrian Utley (Portishead).

She has gone on to release three more critically acclaimed independent albums on her own Death Row Bride label:  Death Row Bride, Situation Normal Then and Dusting For Prints.  Hazel recently played in Adrian Utley’s guitar orchestra with conductor Charles Hazelwood.

She lives in Bristol where she teaches guitar and is currently playing with the Flux Capacitors.

  • Dear Hillcrest

    Wed 10 Mar 2021
We were all hugely touched to receive this lovely poem about our school.  It brought a happy tear to many an eye. Thank you to Hillcrest parent Emilia Mildmay. We think you've all been amazing too!

                Dear Hillcrest

I’ve loved the record-breaking post it notes

    Tennis balls and orange hair

    The jelly bath to come

    And the newsletters that care

I know how hard you work

It’s an out of hours job

But you did it with a smile on

Whilst the country had a swab

There’s a lot of different homes out there

    All asking different questions

And I’m sure there were a lot of times

    A few surplus suggestions

There’s no present I could give you

That can sum up how I feel

And we don’t need more material stuff

Whilst we all begin to heal

But I’d like tell you that I love you

    That it hasn’t gone unseen

I know you’ve got your grades to meet

Still, our kids are no machine

And the fact that you acknowledge this

That you think outside the box

    Putting mental health before percentages

    Is perhaps quite Unorthodox

I would also like to thank Wilma

Who can’t go without a mention

She’s a special kind of asset and

    She’s got my kids attention

So have a massive heart felt hug

Even if it’s from a distance

I have only really got through this

    Having had your kind assistance

    Emilia Mildmay

    you've been reading!

A humongous thank you to all of you who got involved in this year's World Book Day - you all played your part in making it a fun-filled and word-filled day.

Close to half a million words were read by Hillcrest children yesterday, which is just phenomenal!

Lots of you also wrote amazing stories about Barney and Wilma.

We are going to make a collage of all the weird and wonderful places you read yesterday, we were so impressed with your innovation!

A special 'thank you' to the more than 200 children and staff who dropped into one or more of the 30 children's storytimes, your thoughts and presence made for a wonderful atmosphere.

An extra special 'thank you' to our 30 readers. I was in awe as I watched each and every one of you step up to the challenge and read your books with poise, passion and a huge smile on your faces. The variety of books was fantastic and kept me hooked all day. All of us here at Hillcrest are enormously proud of you - thank you for making the 24th World Book Day extra special.

We have been inundated with emails for our various World Book Day competitions so the winners won't be announced until next week. If you have any entries still to email in, please send them to school@hillcrest.bristol.sch.uk.

Thank you again and please don't stop reading.
